The Key to Having Sex While Menstruating
It is common for people to avoid having sexual intercourse during menstruation.  The menstrual blood, tampons, and sanitary pads can potentially get in the way of the "mood." There are are also certain religions and beliefs that females during menstruation are "unclean."  However, there are many benefits to having sex during menstruation and many crafty ways to avoid the mess! Sexual intercourse during menstruation is a completely natural and safe act and causes no harm to either partner.
The Benefits of Having Sex during Menstruation
It is common for females to feel more desirous for sex during the first few days of menstruation due to changes in hormones, which can make the experience more rewarding for both partners.  Many women also report that their menstruation seems to end sooner than if they had not had sexual intercourse.  This is probably because the muscle spasms from orgasm allow menstrual flow to come out quicker than usual.  Furthermore, the hormones that your body releases during sex (such as oxytocin) help relieve the menstrual cramps, depression, and irritability associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

The Risks of Having Sex during Menstruation
A female can get pregnant at any time during her menstrual cycle, even on her period!  Although it is less likely to occur than at other times, it is still possible.  If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, it is important to continue using at least one form of birth control (whether it be a condom or The Pill).  To learn more about hormonal forms of birth control, click here.
It is also extremely important to use at least one form of STI preventative at all times, such as the male condom. To learn more about barrier methods, such as the male condom, click here. During menstruation, the cervix expands more than usual to allow blood flow.  This creates a pathway for bacteria and viruses to travel into the female's uterus and pelvic regions and transmit an STI.  Also, the vagina has a lower acidity at this time, which puts the female at a greater risk of a yeast or bacterial infection. Bottom line - always protect yourself during sexual intercourse! To learn more about STIs, click here.

Tips on How to Avoid the Mess During Sexual Intercourse
The most simple and common way to avoid a mess during sexual intercourse is to place a towel or cloth underneath the female in missionary position (female on her back, male on top).  Many people are surprised to see just how little blood actually leaks out!  It is also possible to have sex in other positions, such as female on top, but there is the possibility of more leakage due to gravity.  In either of these positions, it is a good idea to keep some soft tissues nearby just in case.

Another great way to enhance cleanliness is to have sex in the shower. Not only will this introduce novelty and excitement into your sex life, but also the water will help wash away any menstrual blood!  Since water can dry out the natural lubrication of the vagina, it might be a good idea to also use a lubricant.
If you use sanitary pads, there is also the option of leaving your underwear and pad on during sex and just pushing them to the side. The pad helps absorb any menstrual flow that may come out, and it even has the added bonus of making the vagina feel tighter to the male partner as he rubs against it.
Diaphragms, contraceptive sponges, or male and female condoms can also be used to help lessen menstrual flow leakage. While these devices do not completely block menstrual flow, they either help absorb some of it or just keep the blood off of your partner.
Last but not least, you have the option of using a menstrual cup, such as the Softcup, which blocks menstrual flow and can be used during sexual intercourse without being felt by either partner.

What is the Softcup?
The Softcup is a new product that can be worn for up to 12 hours and blocks a female's menstrual flow. It is a flexible cup-shaped device that is placed inside the vagina against a female's cervix and works by blocking menstrual flow.  Because it is placed deep within the vaginal canal, it can not be felt during sexual intercouse and prevents the mess!
There are two types of Softcup, the disposable and reusable versions. The disposable version should be thrown out after every use (which lasts up to 12 hours), and the reusable version can be used repeatedly throughout one menstrual cycle. Benefits of the Softcup

  • Eliminates menstrual odor
  • Cost-effective (especially the reusable version)
